If you've never seen anything but supermarkets all your life, you'll love the Port Antonio Market. There are two entrances. The one off Harbour Street is an open air area of primarily fruit and vegetable stalls. The whole area is shaded by tarps strung from everywhere. It's a wonderful place to hang out and let the whole world come to you.
While you are at it, try the fresh fruits. More different kinds of bananas than you've ever seen. The West Street side is a typical Carribean market building. A large open building full of stalls selling everything you can imagine. Brooms made of a tree limb and palm leaves for a few dollars make great souvenirs. They come in all sizes from front porch to whisk. Gaily attired dolls of every sort and great wood carvings are to be found here at rock bottom prices.
In the back you find fresh meat hanging and fresh fish waiting for the pot. Most Jamaican markets seem to slow down from monday through wednesday. The Port Antonio market jumps all week.
