There are many tours to the Blue Mountains. Eco tourism is beginning to boom here. However it's not as sprightly one hour or even one afternoon drive if you want to get to the top of the Blue Mountains. You must still start your treck from the Kingston side of the mountains. You must stay overnight in the area either camping or in very basic accommodation and then walk or mountain bike 2-4 hours in the dark to get to the peak at dawn. The beauty of the Jamaican mountains in Portland can't be overstated. With all the rain they get, the vegetation, rivers, falls and vistas are what dreams are made of. In Port Antonio you walk from 'Jamaica Heights Resort' up Spring Bank Road to 'Shutover'. There you continue on the mountain ridge for about half an hour. You will see the ocean and all of Port Antonio on one side and deep down in the valley the Rio Grande river and the whole range of the Blue Mountains behind it on the other side. It is the most spectacular view of the mountains and many of our guests take that two hour walk two or three times a week. Once you see the river mouth and the coastline to the west its time to turn around. You will be surprised how the vistas change walking the same way back.If you love birdwatching, treeferns, the blue thunbergia erecta and other flowers of the rainforest you won' t be dissappointed. |
